What Experience Does Dr. Gonyon Have With Breast Reconstruction?

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Denis Gonyon understands a breast cancer diagnosis can be devastating, but it is his mission to provide women with respect, care and compassion. He is honored to be able to offer breast reconstruction as an option and believes it is his responsibility to provide women with his cosmetic and reconstructive expertise. He is experienced in several techniques, including implant-based reconstruction and breast reconstruction using fat grafting.

“My heartfelt thanks goes out to Dr. Gonyon and team. When my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer, we were overwhelmed with information, doctor visits, and life-changing decisions. Fighting breast cancer was our obvious #1 priority. We knew my wife’s physical appearance would change for a period of time; but frankly I underestimated how important it was to start her on the cosmetic recovery path at the same time as everything else. I know each case if different, but for my wife the reconstruction has been one of the few positive activities during her surgeries and chemo treatment plan. Your valuable skills, quality of care, and encouraging words have helped restore her confidence. In the middle of many daunting experiences, the reconstruction process has provided her with a positive focus.”

Breast Implant Reconstruction

The size of your tumor will determine the amount of breast tissue that must be removed during your surgery. Dr. Gonyon has found, for women who have sufficient breast tissue, immediate breast implant reconstruction provides very good results. With breast implant reconstruction, a saline or silicone implant is placed, and remaining tissue is formed over the implant. This method is less invasive, and in many instances does not require muscle or tissue to be removed. In other breast reconstruction cases it may be necessary to use a temporary tissue expander to achieve the final result you desire.

Dr. Gonyon offers collagen grafts to improve the breast reconstruction procedure and results. With this option, a prepared collagen graft is used to support the breast implant, instead of altering your muscle. This provides a natural-feeling, well-supported breast with a minimum of modification to your chest wall. Recovery from collagen graft reconstruction is much faster than other methods, but may not be fully covered by some insurance companies.

Flap Reconstruction

Every patient has unique needs and Dr. Gonyon takes time to listen to your concerns, and will  work with your general surgeon, oncologist and primary physicians to help you find a solution that will make you feel more balanced and comfortable after your mastectomy.

Breast Reconstruction Frequently Asked Questions

How long after my mastectomy do I need to wait for breast reconstruction surgery?

There are many options for breast reconstruction surgery that include performing the procedure immediately after your mastectomy, or delayed for several weeks or months afterward. Board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Denis Gonyon, will work with both you and your general surgeon to help determine the best time for you to undergo breast reconstruction surgery.

Immediate reconstruction includes Dr. Gonyon performing breast reconstruction during the same surgery as your mastectomy. Dr. Gonyon operates with many general surgeons in Northern Colorado at the facility of their choice. Delayed reconstruction is performed by Dr. Gonyon as a separate surgery weeks or months after the mastectomy. In many cases, due to other cancer treatments, chemotherapy or radiation, delayed can help provide a better long-term result. Dr. Gonyon is privileged to operate at all area facilities including:

Will breast reconstruction interfere with cancer screening?

Breast reconstruction will not affect future cancer screenings. Depending on the type of reconstruction, such as the flap method, mammograms may be more difficult requiring different detection methods. Cancer screeners can accommodate all types of reconstruction, and it is important you tell your physician what type of breast reconstruction you have had to ensure proper detection methods are utilized.

What is recovery from breast reconstruction like?

In general, recovery from breast reconstruction varies with each patient, the type of mastectomy, the type of reconstruction and other cancer treatments. Dr. Gonyon will talk to you about your specific recovery schedule during your consultation, as well as the differences between each technique and their varying recoveries.

Will my reconstructed breasts look and feel like my natural breasts?

Options for breast reconstruction have come a long way in the past 20 years, and reconstructed breasts can provide symmetry and restore balance for women who have had a mastectomy. They cannot be made to look and feel exactly like your natural breasts. Further surgeries may be required to create a nipple and areola, and scarring will be inevitable with this procedure.
