Protect your Skin from Sun Damage this Summer

Categories: Uncategorized

Summer in Colorado is full of sunshine. Our premium skin care products can help revive and rejuvenate sun damaged skin, but prevention of sun damage is equally important. A moderate amount of exposure to sunlight is actually good for you. About 10 minutes of unprotected exposure a day boosts your levels of vitamin D, which can improve your mood and energy, but soaking up too many rays can have consequences, such as:

  • Wrinkles
  • Age spots
  • Discoloration
  • Dry skin
  • Cataracts
  • Skin cancer

In Northern Colorado, we love the outdoors. Days in the sun are pretty much the weekend norm for most of us. So how can you protect yourself from UV rays and still enjoy the summer? There are many things you can do to avoid the damaging effects of the sun, such as:

Sunscreen: Always wear sunscreen when you’re going to be outside. Choose one with a SPF rating of 15 or higher. Choose a type of sunscreen you like so that you’ll be more likely to apply it regularly. Sunblocks containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide tend to be less irritating than chemical sunscreens. Sunblocks work by blocking radiation. On the other hand, chemical sunscreens work by absorbing some of the rays while still letting some radiation in so you can still tan. Whichever type you choose, make sure it blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Apply it 15 minutes before going out, and then reapply every 2 hours. Don’t forget the sun protective lip balm.

Covering your skin with hats and clothes: Sunscreens and sunblocks work very well, but your skin can still get sun damaged over time even when you use these lotions. An equally important habit is to wear a wide-brimmed hat and SPF-rated clothing, especially if you’ll be in the sun for most of the day. A wide-brimmed hat keeps rays off your ears, head and face. A hat may be very helpful in preventing facial wrinkles and age spots.

Seek shade during hours of the most direct sunlight: At the high elevations in our state, the sun is especially damaging. The sun rays are strongest between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm. During these hours, avoid any unnecessary time in the sun when possible. Lounge in the shade if you’re having lunch outside, for instance.
