Ask Dr. G: A new study says I don’t need to get a mammogram every year; what should I be doing?
Question: A new study says I don’t need to get a mammogram every year; what should I be doing?
Answer: I get asked this question a lot, and with the recent publication of this article, I can see how women are now more confused than ever. My recommendation is the same as the American Cancer Society– women 40 and older should get a routine mammogram every year and my recommendation is that women with a strong family history of breast cancer should start sooner.
Ultimately you have to make the decision about what is right for you, but I routinely have patients who detect breast cancer in very early stages because they get routine screening mammograms.
